Big Bang and G-Dragon among the best idol groups of the decade and the most anticipated artists

The first decade after the new millennium is finally drawing to a close. Having the most dense history of mankind with the most upheavals than any other generation, the change in culture in the past 10 years is no exception.

New content was constantly produced at an unimaginable speed, and a variety of new spheres were created. Both the producers and consumers of culture got distracted by some of the greatest-known turmoils and, as a result, were unknowingly swept up by the waves of change. Kyung Hyang Newspaper analyzed the last 10 years of Korean culture in closer detail.

‘Digital singles’, ‘bell sounds’, ‘ringtones’, ‘BGM’, ‘sound source’ – these are newly created terms of the 21st century that have now been added into everyday language. The following example will show how the meanings of these terms have changed in the past decade with regards to the mass music market, in comparison to past generations.

From ‘album’ to ’sound source’
When selling physical CD albums were at its peak, it was common to release 10~12 songs in one album which consisted of a variety of genres. During these times, there were many lively discussions about the singers’ musical philosophies and values that were sensed throughout the whole album, but ever since the establishment of online music sites where people were able to download a single song at a time, these discussions quickly became meaningless. Almost instantaneously, virtues of music on whether a song can catch the attention of the general public began to emerge.

The listening environment also began to change as a result of the materialization of MP3 players and other digital devices that made it easier for people to easily listen to music anywhere, as well as download and delete songs freely. Downloading background music for home pages, ringtones, bell sounds, advertisement songs and online games quickly became a leading trend in the music market, and this phase is only getting deeper. This change in phase is also currently bringing out progressive changes in the means of consumption and marketing techniques. Composer Kim Hyun Suk expressed, The most principal feature to take advantage of on music sites is the one minute previews of songs – the established formula is that if you can’t catch the attention of the consumer in that one minute, it’s over. If you were able to feel the value of a song through music in physical albums, then the current era disgraces the value of music as if it’s some cheap accessory.

Music experts evaluated that some idol groups and their agencies have managed to secure competitiveness at a global level. The major restructuring of the music market to make idols the core of popular music also modified the environment of the media. It is becoming more difficult to watch TV show programs with singers who are not idols. As music genres become more biased, the range in personalities of musicians, which is considered the source of diversification for popular music, is rapidly shrinking, expressed music critic Im Jin Mo.

Meanwhile, three of the eight respondents chose BIGBANG's G-Dragon as one of the three singers whose activities will grab the most interest in the next decade to come.

G-Dragon and T.O.P's Comeback boosted Inkigayo's Ratings

SBS Inkigayo's ratings boosted yesterday, December 19, because of BIGBANG's G-Dragon and T.O.P.

On the 20th, AGB Nielsen's Media Research announced that the program's rating rose to 8.4% at 7PM KST yesterday. Last week, it had a 7.1% rating and jumped 1.3% higher this week. Such rise can be attributed to the comeback stage of G-Dragon and T.O.P.

G-Dragon and T.O.P, with their addictive songs and superb fashion sense, surely gave the music industry a real shock.

MBC's Section TV, shown at the same time as Inkigayo, had the same audience rating last week with 5.7%.

G-Dragon and T.O.P to perform at year-end song festivals for SBS and MBC

BIGBANG's newest duo unit, GD&TOP, will be present at the year-end song festivals for SBS and MBC.

They’ve already released “High High” and “Oh Yeah” last week, ahead of their full album release on the 24th. The highly-catchy tunes have been well-received by both BIGBANG and general music fans alike.

Fans have been treated to additional great news, as YG Entertainment announced that the two will perform on the 29th for the “2010 SBS Gayo Daejun“, and on the 31st for the “2010 MBC Gayo Daejun“.

A YGE representative said, “GD&TOP has just started promotions, but we have decided to have them attend the SBS and MBC year-end music festivals.”

Unfortunately, they will not be present at the “2010 KBS Gayo Festival“, which is sandwiched between the other two shows.

YG Family not participating in the "2010 KBS Music Festival"

YG Entertainment artists will not be taking part in the KBS year-end music festival.

According to music broadcast representatives on December 20th, 2NE1, Se7en, Taeyang, and Big Bang’s unit group GD&TOP, will only participate in the “SBS Gayo Daejun” and the “MBC Music Festival“, held on December 29th and 31st respectively.

A representative stated, “YG and KBS have differences in opinions regarding KBS broadcasting an award during the live festival. Thus, YG has decided to not let their label artists to participate in the program for this year.”

In truth, this year is not the first time KBS will be giving out a ‘Popular Song Award‘ at their music festival. Last year, KBS asked viewers to vote for the artist who most deserved the ‘Popular Song Award’, which was given to 2PM for their track, ‘Again and Again‘.

If this doesn’t really sound like much of a big deal, then here’s the backstory: around 5 years ago, all three broadcasting companies decided to change their year-end award ceremonies to just plain music festivals. Last year, KBS had received vast criticism for suddenly creating a ‘Popular Song Award’ for their Music Festival.

In their defence, KBS has voiced out that their ‘Popular Song Award’ has is not indicative of plans to resurrect an awards ceremony.

“Just like last year, we will not be holding a music awards ceremony this year. We are merely just choosing the most popular song of the year. We are aware of the criticism about us resurrecting an awards ceremony, but we are taking fairness in consideration, and will not be holding an awards show this year,” explained a representative of the KBS Music Festival.

The ‘Popular Song Award’ is solely based on viewers’ votes.

Inkigayo yields to YG Entertainment, but at what cost?

Managers of the K-pop industry are angered over SBS’s hypocrisy and greed for viewers rating by yielding to bigger music agencies.

Over the years, SBS and YG Entertainment have been known to share a good relationship, to the point where rumors of bias abounded as early as last year.

But last month, rumors of a different nature began to surface. Reportedly, the strong relationship that the companies both treasured was beginning to fall apart because of YGE’s attendance at the 2010 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) in Macau. This was despite SBS’s warning that they would suspend any participating artists from performing on “Inkigayo“.

Industry representatives were shocked, therefore, when they saw that G-Dragon and T.O.P performed their first comeback stage on the December 19th episode of “Inkigayo”.

One famous producer stated, Do you think we were stupid to not attend MAMA? Because of SBS’s warning, we gave up on ‘MAMA’ and prepared to be Mnet’s enemies. However, we are now enraged because a big company like YG was not affected at all by their regulations.

The anger and bitterness rose after it was discovered that SBS will begin suspensions in January.

Another manager explained, When SBS begins suspending artists next year, artists from the big companies will be safe, while those who are in weaker companies will be affected. After G-Dragon and T.O.P’s performance, it became obvious as to when SBS would start the process.

The prime agenies who attended this year’s MAMA were YG and JYP Entertainment. Come January, G-Dragon and T.O.P will have finished off their promotions. In addition, JYPE’s 2PM, miss A, and the Wonder Girls will be away from Korea to promote overseas -meaning they won’t be affected at all.

An anonymous girl group’s manager stated, Next year, if these broadcast companies begin competing again, I don’t know what SBS is going to come up with next to grab the managers.

So what were the benefits for “Inkigayo” in relenting to YGE?
December 19th’s episode pulled off a viewer rating increase of 1.3% (in comparison to last week’s), which spiked to 8.4% when GD&TOP appeared on the screen.

SBS’s “Inkigayo” did indeed yield to the pressure of demand from music fans, but at the price of being exposed as hypocritical and self-serving, pandering to the more powerful corporations at the expense of the smaller agencies. For many media critics, the revelation is hardly exceptional at all.
