YG Family not participating in the "2010 KBS Music Festival"

YG Entertainment artists will not be taking part in the KBS year-end music festival.

According to music broadcast representatives on December 20th, 2NE1, Se7en, Taeyang, and Big Bang’s unit group GD&TOP, will only participate in the “SBS Gayo Daejun” and the “MBC Music Festival“, held on December 29th and 31st respectively.

A representative stated, “YG and KBS have differences in opinions regarding KBS broadcasting an award during the live festival. Thus, YG has decided to not let their label artists to participate in the program for this year.”

In truth, this year is not the first time KBS will be giving out a ‘Popular Song Award‘ at their music festival. Last year, KBS asked viewers to vote for the artist who most deserved the ‘Popular Song Award’, which was given to 2PM for their track, ‘Again and Again‘.

If this doesn’t really sound like much of a big deal, then here’s the backstory: around 5 years ago, all three broadcasting companies decided to change their year-end award ceremonies to just plain music festivals. Last year, KBS had received vast criticism for suddenly creating a ‘Popular Song Award’ for their Music Festival.

In their defence, KBS has voiced out that their ‘Popular Song Award’ has is not indicative of plans to resurrect an awards ceremony.

“Just like last year, we will not be holding a music awards ceremony this year. We are merely just choosing the most popular song of the year. We are aware of the criticism about us resurrecting an awards ceremony, but we are taking fairness in consideration, and will not be holding an awards show this year,” explained a representative of the KBS Music Festival.

The ‘Popular Song Award’ is solely based on viewers’ votes.

Inkigayo yields to YG Entertainment, but at what cost?

Managers of the K-pop industry are angered over SBS’s hypocrisy and greed for viewers rating by yielding to bigger music agencies.

Over the years, SBS and YG Entertainment have been known to share a good relationship, to the point where rumors of bias abounded as early as last year.

But last month, rumors of a different nature began to surface. Reportedly, the strong relationship that the companies both treasured was beginning to fall apart because of YGE’s attendance at the 2010 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) in Macau. This was despite SBS’s warning that they would suspend any participating artists from performing on “Inkigayo“.

Industry representatives were shocked, therefore, when they saw that G-Dragon and T.O.P performed their first comeback stage on the December 19th episode of “Inkigayo”.

One famous producer stated, Do you think we were stupid to not attend MAMA? Because of SBS’s warning, we gave up on ‘MAMA’ and prepared to be Mnet’s enemies. However, we are now enraged because a big company like YG was not affected at all by their regulations.

The anger and bitterness rose after it was discovered that SBS will begin suspensions in January.

Another manager explained, When SBS begins suspending artists next year, artists from the big companies will be safe, while those who are in weaker companies will be affected. After G-Dragon and T.O.P’s performance, it became obvious as to when SBS would start the process.

The prime agenies who attended this year’s MAMA were YG and JYP Entertainment. Come January, G-Dragon and T.O.P will have finished off their promotions. In addition, JYPE’s 2PM, miss A, and the Wonder Girls will be away from Korea to promote overseas -meaning they won’t be affected at all.

An anonymous girl group’s manager stated, Next year, if these broadcast companies begin competing again, I don’t know what SBS is going to come up with next to grab the managers.

So what were the benefits for “Inkigayo” in relenting to YGE?
December 19th’s episode pulled off a viewer rating increase of 1.3% (in comparison to last week’s), which spiked to 8.4% when GD&TOP appeared on the screen.

SBS’s “Inkigayo” did indeed yield to the pressure of demand from music fans, but at the price of being exposed as hypocritical and self-serving, pandering to the more powerful corporations at the expense of the smaller agencies. For many media critics, the revelation is hardly exceptional at all.

President YG, 100% satisfied with G-Dragon and T.O.P's performance

BIGBANG's G-Dragon and T.O.P just completed their colorful and addictive stage on the 19th. Yang Hyun Seok, YG Entertainment's president said he was "100% satisfied" with their performance.

Watching the two boys' comeback stage on Inkigayo, Yang Hyun seok looked tense. But after they finished, he gave them a big applause and wore a big smile on his face. Here's a short Q&A session with him after:

Congratulations! What do you think of their comeback stage today?
YG: I am very satisfied. They were very nervous but they ended up with a very good performance. They are pleased about it too.

Did you think they will be successful?
YG: I was not quite sure because it is different from the union of the whole group. The success of BIGBANG (in their early stage) pressured them but I think that is good.

How was the response from the fans?
YG: They were very pleased too. Thanks. They will be using Knock Out, High High and Oh Yeah as their three title songs, just like 2NE1. Park Bom also performed with them together (for Oh Yeah) on the stage today which made it even more brilliant. Thank you very much.

Can you introduce the songs?
YG: High High is a mix of house electronica and hip-hop and its melody is impressive, which lets them enjoy a powerful stage. GD and T.O.P are particularly charming when performing intense kind of music . Their music, coupled with their special fashion sense, definitely gives people a shock. Oh Yeah is an impressive song with some of the lyrics sung by Park Bom of 2ne1, who certainly enhanced the stage performance.

What activities will this unit group have?
YG: We were already too tired today so we went home early. Tomorrow, we will have a discussion with the director of the music video of High High, then we will do some shooting. It might be the music video which will have the strongest impact. They are scheduled to appear at different events and on TV programs at the end of the year.

Big Bang’s G-Dragon and T.O.P were recently interviewed for KBS 2TV ‘Entertainment Relay‘.

The duo also affirmatively said No when the reporter asked if they had any girlfriends. Slyly, the reported then asked, Are you sure that’s not an answer with your boss in mind?”.
